Kυκλαδικό Ειδύλλιο
Χαμήλωσε το βλέμμα.
Όταν η ομορφιά
εισβάλλει με τόση ορμή στη ζωή σου
μπορεί να σε καταστρέψει.
Τα δύο μυρμήγκια
που τώρα τρέχουν βιαστικά
δίπλα στα γυμνά σου πέλματα
θάβουν τα καλοκαιρινά τους όνειρα
βαθιά στο χώμα.
Το φορτίο που κουβαλάνε
δεν πρόκειται να τα συνθλίψει.
Έχουν μετρήσει καλά τις δυνάμεις τους.
Η σκιά σου σβήνει μέσα στην σκιά του δέντρου.
Μαύρο στο μαύρο.
Ενοχή που πρέπει να μείνει στο σκοτάδι
για να συνεχίζει να σε ορίζει.
Το θάμβος όμως αυτών των θραυσμάτων
μπορεί ακόμη να σε κρατήσει.
Δεν έχεις ανάγκη από επίθετα.
Από ανούσιες υπεκφυγές.
Κάθε ερώτηση είναι μία επιθυμία.
Κάθε απάντηση ( το ξέρεις πια ) μια απώλεια.
Μείνε εκεί που στέκεσαι.
Σε λίγο θα κοπάσει η βροχή.
Τα σύννεφα δεν ρωτούν πού.
Απλώς συνεχίζουν την πορεία τους.

Cycladic Idyll
Lower your gaze.
When beauty
invades life with such force
it can destroy you.
The two ants
that now run hastily
near your naked feet
burry their summer dreams
deep into the ground.
The weight they carry
will not crush them.
They have measured their strength well.
Your shadow fades into the shadow of the tree.
Black into black.
Guilt that had to remain in the dark
so to keep defining you.
The glow of these fragments though
can still sustain you.
You don't need any adjectives,
any pointless excuses.
Every question is a desire.
Every answer ( you know it ) is a loss.
Stay where you are.
The storm will lull in a while.
The clouds do not ask where.
They just continue their journey.

Haris Vlavianos was born in Rome in 1957. He studied Economics and Philosophy at the University of Bristol; and History and Political Theory at Oxford University. He has published ten collections of poetry, including Vacation in Reality (Āþþ9), which won the prestigious “Diavazo” Poetry Prize and was shortlisted, along with his later Sonnets of Despair (2011) for the National Poetry Prize. He has published collections of thoughts and aphorisms on poetry and poetics, and a book of essays entitled Does Poetry Matter? Thoughts on a Useless Art (2009). History of Western Philosophy in 100 Haiku (Daedalus Press) was published in 2014 and translated into English by Peter Mackridge. Vlavianos has translated the works of poets such as Ezra Pound, e.e.cummings, Wallace Stevens, Michael Longley, William Blake, Fernando Pessoa, and Anne Carson. His books have been translated into many languages. He is editor of the influential journal “Poetics”, as well as poetry editor at the ‘Patakis’ publishing house, and is currently a Professor of History and Politics at the American College of Greece. In 2014 he published his first novel, Blood into Water. His latest work, Hitler’s Secret Diary (Patakis 2016), is a study of Hitler’s personality through the fictional ‘recreation’ of the lost diary he kept while in prison in 1924.
Katerina Iliopoulou is a poet, artist and translator, who lives and works in Athens. Her poetry books Mister T., 2007 (first prize for a new author by the literary journal Diavazo), Asylum (2008), The book of the soil (2011) and Every Place, only Once and Completely (2015), are all published by Melani editions. She is also the author of several essays and reviews on poetry. She proposes poetry as a strategy for life, addressing issues of identity, perception and myth both in the personal and the collective field of experience. Her translations into Greek include the work of Sylvia Plath, Mina Loy, Robert Hass, Ted Hughes, Walt Whitman. Her poetry has been translated and published in literary reviews, journals and anthologies in many languages (English, French, Spanish, Swedish, Finnish, Turkish, Bulgarian). She has participated in a number of international poetry festivals, writing and translation programs. She is co-editor of greekpoetrynow.com, a bilingual platform for contemporary Greek poetry and editor in chief of [FRMK] (pharmako), a biannual journal on poetry, poetics and visual arts.
